An unforgettable musical experience

During January All Saints choir members Nick Bester and Kathryn Glover, and All Saints Director of Music, Anne Morgan met up in Sydney, having been accepted into the inaugural Tallis Scholars Summer School, run by the world famous Tallis Scholars.

Each day started at 9am with a half hour warm up, conducted by Jan Coxwell, one of the Tallis Scholars. A day filled with rehearsals, talks and other activities followed, ending with a sung service of compline at 9:30pm, conducted by Andrew Carwood. All music was sung unaccompanied.

One of the main attractions of the Summer School was the ability to form your own small groups and work on music of your own choosing. This allowed for close tutoring with members of the Tallis Scholars; this music was performed at an informal concert. The groups were of a very high standard, performing music from throughout the renaissance period.

During the week we sang Evensong at Christ Church St Laurence. The course participants sung a 12-part Magnificat by Gabrieli, and Ego flos campi by Clemens as the anthem. We were very blessed that our Rector Father David O'Neill was able to join us for Evensong.

The Summer School ended with a final concert sung in St John's College Chapel, conducted by Tallis Scholars director, Peter Phillips, and Tallis Scholar, Patrick Craig. Music included Missa Bel' Amfitrit' Altera by Lassus, Salve Regina for 8 voices by Victoria, Ave Maria by Parsons, Ave verum corpus by Byrd, Ego flos campi by Clemens, Magnificat for 12 voices by Gabrieli and music learned in tutor groups.

The summer school was an unforgettable musical experience, during which great friendships were formed with choristers from around Australia and with the members of the Tallis Scholars.
