Murder in the Pulpit
Reviewed by Brian Porter
Harlin has done it again! He is one of the best known
priests in the Diocese, every vacant parish's preferred
locum and one of the wittiest speakers on the circuit. He is
an elfin puckish character now in his 80th year who tells me
that these days he is substantially plastic - hips and all
of that. But there is nothing plastic about him as a veteran
communicator.
In a long and colourful 50 year ministry as a school and
army chaplain, Hobart's
Dean and Vicar of St Andrew's Brighton, Harlin Butterley -
'with a name like Harlin Butterley, you would have to have a
sense of humour' - he has give us a second volume of his
ruminations from pew sheets and elsewhere. He calls them
Encouraging Essays which is an accurate description because
the tone and temper is always positive and uplifting. I have
kept mine on the bedside table over Christmas and read a
couple each night before sleep with a smile on my face or a
resolve to do this or that the next day. Beneath the wit is
much wisdom and a gentle kindliness characteristic of
Harlin.
But the subliminals are there as well in these exercises
in an earthed theology that is the genius of old Fr
Butterfly as he was once listed. Good on you Harlin for
sharing so much of your rich experience with us once
again!
