Christmas Cheer and Carols

Often parishes without a rector lose a bit of leadership. Christmas at St George's, Battery Point showed how parish life and witness can keep on keeping on. The traditional carolling in the streets occurred on Christmas Eve, an outreach of the parish for the last 40 years. This year saw a small but happy band of carol singers brave the cold intermittent rain to bring Christmas cheer to the streets. Accompanied by Dr Christopher Newell from St David's Cathedral, we picked up some German singers along the way. When we sang Silent Night, they sang Stille Nacht, proof of the universal meaning and reach of carols.

We were invited into a pub, and managed to drum up some business: 'I have not been to Church in 25 years, but I am coming tonight', said one man in the pub. Whilst we partook of complimentary lemon squash to wet our whistle, there was opportunity for a few meaningful pastoral conversations.

So often we sit in our churches and proclaim the Gospel. Carolling in the streets was St George's way of bringing the Gospel to the community.
