God's reckless generosityOne of the core values Holy Trinity Launceston identified as a parish is to exhibit 'reckless generosity', reflecting God's generosity to us. As part of our giving to the community some of us set up a free drinks stall before the Launceston Christmas Parade last December, because the parade participants all assemble just outside our church building. Before the parade we served hot drinks in the main, to grateful people who generally stated, 'I could kill for a cup of coffee', with the occasional water and cordial to younger participants. We then watched the parade start off, thinking that our task was over. We were greatly mistaken. The parade ended where it had started, and then we were inundated with desperately hot, thirsty participants. Then we were flooded with parents with young children, who were thrilled that they could give their children a free cold drink. We served approximately seventy drinks in half an hour. Overall we served over 120 drinks. Several people also took the opportunity to look through the church. We were quite struck at the number of people who expressed amazement that we were not charging anything, and that we didn't have a donation box anywhere. We plan to be back next year to witness again to God's reckless generosity.
