School chaplaincy set to grow in 2007

Since the announcement of the National School Chaplaincy Program on 29 October last year, there has been a number of expressions of interest from schools wanting to engage the services of a chaplain, and from individuals keen to become chaplains.

There will be more interest at the start of the school year and additional chaplains will be appointed as the year progresses. Tasmanian schools (primary and secondary) have until 4 April to apply online in the first round of federal funding - up to $20 000 per school for a maximum of three years to employ a chaplain for two days a week. The federal funding guidelines can be accessed here.

The federal initiative will complement and expand (not replace) the well-established chaplaincy programs already in place in many Tasmanian schools, thanks to the co-operation between the Tasmanian Council of Churches (as the major chaplaincy service provider) and the Department of Education in establishing guidelines, and to the ongoing support of churches and local communities which sponsor and support the excellent work that chaplains do in our schools. (See here for state program guidelines - type 'chaplain' in the search box.)

Scripture Union, as the major employer of chaplains in Tasmanian schools (on behalf of the TCC), believes that local church support for chaplains will need to continue and expand to ensure that appropriately qualified and trained people are appointed as chaplains and that chaplaincy continues to be properly managed and supported at a local level. The new Tabor College chaplaincy course and Forge Network chaplaincy internship program are welcome training initiatives.

School chaplaincy is one of the most effective means by which a church can invest its resources into mission in the local community.

And if you want to be encouraged and learn about what a chaplain does, talk to people in schools and colleges where chaplains currently work. Here's a list of those:

Colleges: Hellyer, Don, Launceston, Newstead, Claremont, Elizabeth

High Schools: Parklands, Penguin, Ulverstone, Deloraine, Exeter, Prospect, Riverside, Scottsdale, Geilston Bay, Ogilvie, Cosgrove*

District Schools: Cressy, Woodbridge, Sorell*

* position currently vacant
