East Coast firesAnglicare Tasmania is an organisation that people come to for assistance in times of crisis. Chris Jones tells of a recent response to crisis. During the bushfires at Scamander and St Mary's in December last year, fourteen homes were destroyed or partially destroyed. These families lost everything. In response, Anglicare launched the East Coast Fire Appeal. I was overwhelmed by the amount of donations Anglicare received during this time. Tasmanians were willing to offer whatever they had spare in order to provide comfort to these families in this time of crisis, particularly during the Christmas period. Anglicare received donations of money, household items, furniture, clothing, toiletries and new bikes. Tasmanians from all over the state wanted to ensure that people affected by the fires were still able to enjoy Christmas. We have put in place procedures to allow our East Coast office to access funds as soon as families need them. So far, Anglicare has assisted eight families to find long term accommodation and has allocated all the material goods donated so that their homes can be furnished. I am especially thankful for all the support we received from the parish of St Helens. The parishioners gave generously of their time and energy to provide comfort for their local community. Thank you to all of those people who have given donations. Tasmanians once again demonstrated their generosity of spirit and opened their hearts to families in their time of need.
The Revd Dr Chris Jones is CEO of Anglicare Tasmania. |
