Harlin Butterley's new book

Harlin Butterley has written another book of encouraging and cheerful essays, as something of a sequel to his earlier book Poisoned while Preaching which was written while he was Dean of St David's Cathedral in Hobart. (Some of us remember the episode that prompted that book.)

In his introduction to the new book Murder in the Pulpit, he says:

Timothy was once exhorted by his mentor, St Paul, to 'Preach the word'. What a pity that so often 'boring' and 'sermon' seem to go together. A modern Bible translation speaks of Scripture as being 'God-breathed', and yet so often those who occupy pulpits present such Scripture as dull and uninspiring.

Preaching the Word should be exciting, but even St Paul had someone go so soundly to sleep in his sermon that he fell off his lofty perch in the shed where Paul was preaching.

There is a section in this book with the heading 'When bad things happen to good people'. In a world where we enjoy the gift of free will and where history records events of joy and sorrow, of success and disaster, the Christian in faith points to a Cross of apparent failure and to the Resurrection of victory and of hope.

Our grand daughter, Kate, was tragically killed in a horrific collision on the Midland Highway in Tasmania. Three others, girls of similar age to Kate, were also killed. We mourned with Kate's parents Simon and Karen, her brother Michael and her sisters Nicole and Anita and this book is dedicated to the memory of Katrina Anne Butterley - Kate. 28th March 1987 - 3rd May 2006

Murder in the Pulpit is privately published and all proceeds will go to Anglicord and Rotary. Details of how to purchase a copy will be available soon.
