Some challenging, but not too heavy reading for Christmas

From Peter at Ridley College Bookroom

  • Miroslav Volf, has, until this book, been a bit beyond the average reader. Free of Charge (2005, RRP $19.95, 247pp) has a foreword from Rowan Williams, and recent high praise from NT Wright. What more can we say? Volf draws from popular culture as well as from a wealth of literary and theological sources. Blending the best of theology and spirituality, he encourages us to echo in our own lives God's generous giving and forgiving.
  • For many Christians, the best portion of our waking hours are spent at work. But how do we integrate daily work into our walk of faith? In God on Monday (2005, RRP $19.80, 179pp) Benny Tabalujan draws on more than two decades of experience as a lawyer, educator and consultant to reflect on critical issues including the purpose of work, how to manage the demands of work, family and church, evangelism at work, and how career ambitions fit with our faith. Read Chapter 3 of this book, 'Sabbath in the City', online.
  • John Smith was an average 1960s Australian minister's kid - somber suit, neatly trimmed haircut and unwavering conservative attitudes. But events drastically reshaped his life. On the Side of the Angels (2006, RRP $19.95, 317pp) published in 1987, is now revised, with a reflection 'Twenty years on'.
  • Dr Grace Warren has brought hope and healing to thousands worldwide, saving feet and transforming the lives of those with diabetes and leprosy by her inventive surgical skills. Doctor Number 49 (2006, RRP $30, 319 pages) is a stirring record of a totally committed Christian doctor and her work with The Leprosy Mission.
  • Unseen Footprints (2005, RRP $20, 174pp) , the 2006 ACLS Book of the Year, takes on a journey through movies, conversations, natural wonders to discover God's presence in our lives. Sheridan Voysey's delightfully 'packaged' book, is a suitable gift for the thinking non-Christian.
  • God 360° (2006, RRP $19.95, 254 pp) is a gutsy little devotional book for 120 days. Connection between God's word and God's world; intentional experiences that will stimulate you to act out in your life the challenges from the Bible. Covers Colossians, Ecclesiastes, and Luke, as well as individual scripture passages. Each double page has room for some notes. Andy Flanagan, the author, is British YFC's national songwriter, performer and worship leader.
  • Lauren Winner's first book, Girl meets God (2002, RRP $15, 303pp) is a mixture of biography and spiritual journey. This new young author has travelled a fascinating path to Christian faith. She reflects with humour about her Jewish heritage, and the book is full of her quotable insights.
