Christmas in Argentina

Feliz Navidad - Merry Christmas from John and Gayelene Harrower

Christmas is celebrated with much devotion and great happiness in Argentina. Many of the Christian traditions are observed: the Advent season with calendars and treats; Nativity scenes are set up at home; Christmas trees are decorated and families attend church together on Christmas Eve followed by a late night dinner feast - fireworks at midnight and dancing and fiesta! Some families give gifts at midnight but the more traditional families give their gifts on Epiphany (see below).

The weather is hot, so cool fruit drinks with cider are popular, as is champagne to toast the birth of the baby Jesus. Christmas Day is often a lunch-to-evening BBQ feast with family and friends.

The Roman Catholic heritage is strong and Christmas continues until the celebration of the baptism of Jesus. Gifts are traditionally given on Epiphany, January 6th, which recalls the coming of the wise men with gifts for the baby Jesus. On the eve of Epiphany children put water and straw outside for the camels to eat - and they normally do! The children also put their shoes out ready for the wise men to fill them with gifts - and they normally do!

Christmas in Argentina is a marvellous time of devotion to the baby Jesus and enjoying life together as church, family and friends.

The knitted Nativity scene pictured above was found at All Saints in South Hobart.
