Chris Bowditch invites readers to explore the role of their church in youth ministry.

Growing a youth ministry in your local church will require change. We need to realise this and take the necessary steps to see this occur, so that we might become a healthy church transforming the lives of young Tasmanians. To do this we need to work together as a diocese.

Our strategy is to see all churches working together to support, grow and resource the ministry of others to young people. Hopefully you've seen the poster below in your church building somewhere (if not, then please hassle your minister or Mission Support Officer). The poster describes how different sorts of churches can work together to see growth in their ministry to young people. We want you, people with a passion for youth, to start thinking about the role their church currently has and could have in reaching out to this generation of young people who don't know Jesus.

I also want to use this article as an 'Agony Aunt'-style column. If you have any problems, or questions regarding your attempts to reach out to young people in your church communities, please email them to chris@baywest.org.au Together with a group of people practising youth ministry, we will put our heads together and respond to some of the challenges that you are having in setting up and sustaining ministry to young people.

Finally I would like to recommend another youth ministry resource.

Doug Fields has written an excellent book called Your First Two Years in Youth Ministry. The book is full of stories and principles from Fields' own successes and failures over 20-plus years in youth ministry. It provides excellent insight into some of the struggles and joys of starting out in ministering to young people.
