LINX DanceA creative ministry with a difference It was ten years ago that some young school students pleaded with their teacher for some dance lessons after school. A decade on, LINX is celebrating its 10th year, and has grown to employ five tutors caring for over 160 students. But LINX is not about numbers. Its success is due essentially to a Christian philosophy. What is this philosophy that has drawn both Christian and not-yet Christian families? LINX has offered an alternative dance group - not radical, but noticeably different from what there is on offer in the community. It is a group that bridges the gap between the highly disciplined skills of classical dance and the cabaret styles on offer elsewhere. LINX has successfully used a Christian philosophy of non-competitive, friendly and nurturing teaching. It has provided a fun, funky, professional and thoughtful atmosphere in which to learn dance. Students learn skills in dance and performing. Teamwork, co-operation, sharing and positive group dynamics are essential elements. Dance styles are modern. Dance students want jazz, funk, hip-hop, rap and other modern styles. The difference is that LINX vets all of its music, lyrics and dance movements, and also teaches students to be discerning. Students of all abilities, sizes, shapes, skills and backgrounds can find their own creative style and moves within this group, develop confidence without fear, and find acceptance. It is remarkable how positive the dancers, both male and female, are to each other. At the end of year concert (a feature event that draws capacity crowds, including school groups), the students, parents and tutors support one another and work together to create a memorable experience. In our current climate of sport-obsessed, highly competitive clubs for kids, LINX provides a group that is simply fun, where students learn real skills in an environment that is loving, positive, professional and caring. Ministry?LINX is out there, providing a popular group for kids to learn both creative and relational skills. However, the ministry of LINX not only reaches its students, but also their families. Our adults' group provides a class for mums (dads are welcome, but have not yet braved the dance floor!) and a place for conversation. Following the model of Jesus who walked, lived, worked and talked with the people in his community, LINX Dance provides a creative outlet for building relationships, and that has challenged people to say 'There's something special about this!' And we are ready to meet that conversation.
