Useful skill for a rector

Warwick Cuthbertson, the Rector of Burnie for the past five years, has been praised in the media for his quick action in saving the life of an elderly neighbour recently. Warwick and daughter Carly saw the flames coming from the house across the street about 9.30pm. Carly called 000 and Warwick ran to the house.

The building was well alight, and Warwick and a passerby broke down a solid wooden door to rescue the woman, who is in her 80s, from the blaze.

Fire investigators said the actions of Warwick and the passerby, along with the quick response of fire crews, prevented a potentially tragic outcome.

Reflecting on the rescue, Warwick said, ‘At the time, you say a quick prayer and just act. I just did what any-one else would do.

I must admit I said a longer prayer after the event.’

It is not the first time Warwick has been directly responsible for saving a life. Whilst Rector of St John’s, Burleigh Heads, he resuscitated a man at a swimming pool. He was a blood donor for many years and received formal first aid training through his role as Chaplain in the Royal Australian Naval Reserve, a position he has undertaken since 1983. He was decorated for services to the Royal Australian Navy in 1998.

Part of his Chaplaincy training has been advanced safety training courses, which have included victim retrieval – a useful skill for a Rector!
