Retirement of the
Lay President of AMS
The State Council of the Anglican
Mens Society in Tasmania was in recess during the
1980s. However, the St
Georges Battery Point Branch was revived in 1986
and in 1992, a new branch was formed at Longford.
The Council met informally on occasions, then in March
1994 the State Council was revived with the inititative of
the Rev. Robert Wisken, who was the State AMS Chaplain
appointed by the Bishop.
At this meeting Ron Miller was elected Lay President and
under his leadership, the AMS in Tasmania recovered from its
1980s slump. The State Council now meets on
three or four occasions each year at venues throughout the
State. Tasmania has also been well represented at AMS
National Conferences during recent years. The state has
hosted national conferences in 1997 and 2003 and will again
be the host in 2007.
The newest branch, Holy
Trinity Launceston, hosted their first State Council
Meeting in April, and it was at this very special occasion
that the State Secretary, Max Robinson, presented to Ron
Miller an engraved certificate of appreciation. Ron
officially retires at the June AGM after serving as Lay
President for more than 12 years.
