A $950,000 Early Learning Centre (ELC), a joint initiative between aged care provider OneCare and St Michael's Collegiate School, has been launched, linking the two Anglican organisations in providing Tasmania's first innovative inter-generational programs.

The Centre is currently being built by OneCare on its Bishop Davies Court (BDC) aged care home site and will be managed by Collegiate staff.

Collegiate Principal Mrs Robyn Kronenberg said the ELC would open in April next year and would meet the growing need for childcare in the Kingborough area, offering 55 childcare places and employing 15 staff. The ELC will also become Tasmania's (and possibly Australia's) first centre to provide on-site intergenerational care programs.

Mrs Kronenberg said the centre would provide opportunities to bridge the generation gap that is increasing in our society. 'The ELC will allow children and the elderly to learn from one another,' she said. One Care CEO Michael Powell said working with Collegiate, OneCare hopes to provide an enriching environment that meets the individual needs of both age groups.

The centre would also assist staff at BDC seeking childcare. Members of the community are invited to take a tour of Collegiate's Anglesea Village South Hobart ELC, to experience the program that will be similarly implemented in Kingston.

Enrolments are now being taken and inquiries should be directed to Katherine Hutton 03 6211 4911.
