CMS rocks BichenoWelcome to Summerview, said Canon John Thew, Federal Secretary of CMS, or rather to all of you! Johns summaries of CMS work around the globe, delivered each morning and illustrated with personal stories, were a highlight of a conference with many highlights. Prayer for our missionaries was a special focus, and participants at all stages on the Christian pathway appreciated the depth of the Bible Studies brought gently by English visitor Dr Colin Chapman. Summerview, the annual CMS conference at beautiful Bicheno in January once again attracted a capacity crowd of all ages. With day visitors, the number of participants exceeded 200. The music team led by Ben McKinnon led worship through song which gave glory to God; their musicality and humble leadership were hugely appreciated. The band spent an hour or so playing in the local pub and the locals enjoyed their music another kind of outreach. It was also discovered that one of our Rev. women plays a mean game of pool. Teams of hard-working young people ran programs which kept children of all ages entertained and cared for, and Launceston kids band Odd Sox staged an impromptu lunchtime concert we saw the Dancing Bishop learning to count! (Photo on p.2) Committed adults cared for the toddlers, accepting the cost of missing out themselves on the adult program. Judith Calfe, serving in Tanzania, and Margaret and John Cannell from Nepal participated in the conference, deepening our knowledge of their work and the needs of those countries. A raft of presenters, which included Bishop John, served up a smorgasbord of workshops on practical issues of mission, whether at home or abroad. Four years at Bicheno under Canon John van Emmeriks leadership has seen the conference outgrow the facilities available, and next years conference will be held at Port Sorell in the North of the state, from Monday 22 to Friday 26 January 2007. Stay tuned.
