The start of the school year is a busy time, with lots of decisions to be made. Here are some resources for all levels of education from pre-school to university.

  • Christianity Today has a wealth of resources and if you have students of any age in your household it is worth going to their website .
This section of their website includes such things as 32 Ways to Start the School Year Right, with advice for parents on First day Jitters, Preparing for Peer Pressure, and Sleepy Heads. Do you know why sleep might be the key to a teen’s school success?
  • The Diocese of Tasmania has joined forces with Scripture Union to establish Kiddliwinks. This is a network for churches interested in running a playgroup on their premises. The opportunity is there for outreach to pre-schoolers and their families and Helen Phillips and Jenny Cowley would be pleased to tall you more about this development in Children’s and Families’ Ministry. Contact Helen 03 6220 2020 or Jenny 03 6234 2577.
  • Scripture Union has educational resources for all ages, including Tiddlywinks, an outstanding and flexible resource series for playgroups, crèche and pre-schools. Each book contains 25 multi-purpose programs with photocopiable artwork and loads of ideas for craft, stories, prayer and more. The SUA website has lots of useful books and ideas or Contact SUTAS 03 6234 2577 or 03 6334 8229
  • An important resource in our schools is the School Chaplain. The Rev’d John Goodwin at Hutchins, the Rev’d Eleanor O’Donnell at Collegiate and the Rev’d Scott Sargent at Grammar have an important role in the spiritual education of our youth and would welcome your support.
  • CRESS (Christian Religious Education in State Schools) is a vital part of our schools’ activity, particuarly for families who chose to send their children to be the ‘salt’ in their local school. Consider becoming involved in your local school, either in the CRESS program or in the school P&F body.
  • Scripture Union supports chaplains in our high schools and colleges and also runs the Christian Option program, by invitation, in many of our state high schools. SU works across and supports all churches.
  • There is an Anglican Chaplain at the University of Tasmania and the Parish of BayWest adjacent to the university has a large outreach to international students. Some of these students are Christians and join in regular worship; others are not Christians, but still enjoy the fellowship and benefits of regular activities and English-conversation sessions held at BayWest. Contact Tim and Emma Wherrett 03 6224 0208.
