CMS Bicheno updateSurviving and Growing in a Radical World summerview program is again shaping up to be very rewarding for those booked in for the CMS summer conference at Bicheno, Tassie East Coast resort town. Commencing on the evening of Monday 16 January and running through until lunch on Friday 20 January, the program is designed to encourage spiritual growth, an understanding of overseas mission and stimulus for mission at home. Afternoons are largely free for recreation, family times or simply kicking back. Plenary sessions, workshops, break-out groups, prayer cells are the backbone of the morning and evening programs, built around music, worship and listening to God. Parallel programs will again operate for young people of all ages, including teenage, primary school and creche groups, with their own leaders, good fun and friend-raising. Daily Bible Studies will be delivered by Colin Chapman entitled, 'Themes in Revelation: How is God at work in the nations and in the church?' Colin, born in India and raised in Scotland, has worked in Cairo, taught in Beirut and headed the CMS training facility in the UK. His latest (2004) book is entitled Whose Holy City? Jerusalem and the Israeli-Palestinian Conflict. Other sessions with Colin will include 'Dialogue as a model for witness to Muslims' and 'A history of Islam and its lessons for work amongst Muslims today'. Mission at home will be the focus of a day with Darryn Altclass, building on Mike Frost's presentations last year. Darryn, who describes himself as a person who was steered to faith by a fellow traveller who himself is not a Christian, is National Co-Director & Tasmanian Director of FORGE Mission Training Network. Locally, he has pioneered a mission community called (re)verb, and is Team Leader for Third Place Communities, a mission agency building community in Third Places (Pubs/Cafes etc). Darryn also lectures in Spirituality, Mission & Evangelism at various colleges around Australia. The wider field of Mission with its opportunities and needs will be the focus of workshops and sessions led by John Thew who heads up CMS in Australia, Judith Calf who serves as Principal of a Bible training college in Tanzania, and John and Margaret Cannell, making a flying visit from Nepal. A star cast of workshop leaders includes our own Bishop John, Paul Cavanough, Dave Rietveld, David Rogers-Smith, Cathryn Thew, Sheelagh Wegman, Bruce Geeves, Meryl Newett, Sue Morton and, of course, our main presenters Colin Chapman, Darryn Altclass and John Thew. Topics will include something for everyone. Please be there - you will be disappointed if you miss it!
