Daunting but exciting

Kate Boughton talked with Marie Ellison about God's leading her to the decision to undertake further training at Ridley College in 2006.

Kate has just completed an Equip Traineeship at BayWest, Sandy Bay

Marie: Can you tell me about your childhood and growing up?

Kate: I grew up in a Christian family. We belonged to St Aidan's Church, Launceston, now Riverlinks. I've always known God existed and loved me. This brought comfort, especially as I wasn't the most outgoing of children. I went to the Launceston Christian School from Prep. to Year 10. Then I attended Launceston College for Years 11 and 12.

That must have been a huge change for you.

My friendship group from the Christian School stayed together. We'd meet up in the cafeteria and the group just grew. It made the change a lot easier.

I know music is a big part of your life. Can you tell me about that?

During College I didn't really know what I wanted to do with my life. Music was one of the things that I was good at, so I decided to go to the Conservatorium, with the plan being to do Education after. I moved to Hobart in 2000 and completed a Bachelor of Music (Hons). I’m also an itinerant music teacher and member of the Derwent Valley Concert Band. We've been to Europe and to Denmark to play at Princess Mary's wedding.

Where has God been in all of this?

God is in everything. Reflecting on my life so far, I can see that God has been behind every decision and has clearly brought me to where I am now. I believe God brought me to BayWest, not just because of how I have grown and the many things that I have learnt, but also how it has played a part in my decisions for the future. I finished my music degree at the end of 2003 and it so happened that Stephen Carnaby was starting up the Equip program at BayWest – I was asked if I would be interested in doing the traineeship and I accepted.

What is the Equip Traineeship?

It's an opportunity to explore my giftings in a very practical way, it's kind of a taster of what full-time ministry is like and a chance to work out whether or not it is a possible future pathway. I've been able to work out some of these questions in the areas of Youth and Young Adults. I've been learning so much, especially when I am teaching and mentoring other young people.

So what does the future hold for you?

At the start of this year I was encouraged to start thinking about fulltime ministry. This was a little daunting, but I've made the decision to study fulltime at Ridley College in Melbourne. I've realised through the traineeship that my passion is Youth and Young Adults. Although I love playing music and teaching and have been involved in it for a long time, I get very excited with the prospect of being able share God with people and encourage and help others to do it too.

This will be a big change for you?

Yeah it will, daunting but exciting as well! I'm looking forward to see what God will do.
