Reason for the season

'Jesus: The reason for the season' is still a good slogan. Find a way to use it. Helen Phillips has some suggestions.

  • World Vision and TEAR Fund have gift catalogues whereby you can purchase an item such as a goat or a sewing machine or water well in a Third World country on behalf of family or friends here.
  • Make dress-up clothes of the Nativity for Christmas presents for young children. Include items like crowns, sheep, gold (chocolate coins), angel wings, 'jewels'.
  • Make Advent calendars that can be used over and over again. Wooden ones are durable and can be painted and decorated with hooks – one for each day of Advent with a Bible verse telling part of the Christmas story.
  • Give a Christmas decoration for a gift each year. One idea is to build up a collection of Nativity scene characters. I’ve got a collection of angels for my tree – you might identify more with shepherds or wise men or the innkeeper.
  • Spend Christmas Eve visiting the lonely or shut-ins and take some special festive food you've made earlier.
  • A group could go carol singing at seniors' hostels, nursing homes etc.
  • Give out candy canes at skate parks. Tie on a message about Jesus.
  • Gift ideas for family and friends
  • Create a personal gift voucher, e.g.
  • An outing with ......... for picnic on a Sunday afternoon of your choice.
  • Feed the ducks at Browns River late afternoon New Years Day.
  • Two walks along the beach at your pace – no sand castles necessary.
  • One babysitting session while you see a new movie.
  • Wash and vacuum car two weekends in a row.
  • Cook dinner one night a week during school term.
