Martyrs’ Day

On Friday 2nd September the Anglican Board of Mission Australia Auxiliary sponsored a Martyrs’ Day service at St George’s, Battery Point. Many Auxiliary members and others attended the Eucharist celebrated by the Rev. Bill Jolly.

At afternoon tea Judy Goede, the Secretary of the ABM Auxiliary, spoke of her experiences at the Martyrs’ School on Martyrs’ Day in 2004. She had also brought her photograph album and some artefacts including a woven bilum or carry bag.

Some of the children and community members had prepared a drama that depicted something of the martyrdom of those who lost their lives. Older members who appreciated the significance of the event were sombre in their response. Bishop George Ambo, who was present, had tears in his eyes as he remembered those that he knew who had been affected the experience.
