Gods SargentsScott Sargent relates how much stronger God can make a marriage. As a copper on my wifes and my shift at the Hobart Police Station people used to joke that I wore the pants at work and Jan at home. Jan graduated from the Academy in September 1994 and in 95 and 96 I was her Patrol Sergeant. A whirlwind romance starting in January 1995 saw us marry at BayWest Church in January the following year. During our engagement Jan re-committed her life to Christ and I became a Christian. A Sunday School background until about the age of 10 and a strong belief in God led Jan to seek a church wedding. Her re-commitment involved her repenting of 10 years of living her life outside of any real relationship with Jesus. I had only been inside churches to see a few baptisms, weddings and funerals and so for me the change was more dramatic. Eight years earlier on top of Cradle Mountain on a perfect, cloudless September day I looked at snow covered mountains and determined that what I was seeing and experiencing could not be a random accident of nature. My conversion and Jans re-commitment resulted from Gods graciously using the welcoming nature of all the people we met at BayWest, two locums filling in for the absent Rector, and the Christianity Explained course. Combined, these things brought us into a close and very real relationship with God and his Son, Jesus Christ. That relationship and His presence in our married life has helped us cope with the loss of four babies, the stresses of raising four more, and helped me give greater priority to my ministries as a husband and father, besides my ministry as a school chaplain. We are convinced that our marriage is stronger and richer for Gods involvement in our lives.
