ABM Literacy Projects

There are many illiterate women in Papua New Guinea and other developing nations. ABM's 2005 Appeal for Women's Literacy is seeking to change the lives of such women through a program called Kisim Save (Gain Knowledge), sponsored by ABM and the Anglican Church of PNG. The program is teaching women throughout PNG to read and write in Pidgin - the most commonly used language in a nation with over 800 tribes.

Now ABM has a new advocate in leading Australian ABC journalist, Jennifer Byrne, who has accepted ABM's invitation to launch the 2005 Appeal for Women's Literacy and spent ten days in PNG meeting the women. She described her ABM trip as a wonderful and unique opportunity to encounter a culture and community without having to see through a journalist's lens.

'It's an extraordinary experience... This isn't a big project but an utterly appropriate one, which touches everyone in each highland village - the voluntary teachers, the determined pupils who nurse their babies during lessons, and of course the Anglican Church which makes it all possible.'

The Literacy projects are a small step towards achieving justice and hope for many rural women. ABM highlighted the program at major launches in May when the effervescent Ms Byrne spoke about the life-changing work being carried out in PNG villages. She enthused, 'It was an unforgettable trip, and a big learning experience for me too.'
