News from Devonport/East Devonport

The Parish of Devonport/East Devonport has been very busy over the past couple of months.

At the end of October more than 140 people gathered in St John's, Devonport to celebrate one hundred years of ministry and service by the Mothers' Union branch at St John's - a great achievement and worthy of recognition.

In his address the special guest the Rt Rev. Robert Beal, retired Bishop of Wangaratta reflected on the impact of Mothers' Union since its inception in 1876 in Britain. The life and work of the MU founder, Mary Sumner, ignited a world-wide movement than continues to uphold family values in local communities in many countries.

Blessing of the Pets

A Blessing of the Pets service with guest speaker Abra Sims from the RSPCA was held in the grounds of St Paul's, East Devonport at the end of November and it was pleasing to have an excellent turn out, particularly with so many people from outside the parish. St Francis of Assisi dropped in to mingle and speak with the various cats, dogs, rabbits, a horse and a pony and their people.

Summer holidays

After the success of the introductory workshops on the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd, run in January-February 2004, St John's Devonport offered another series of three workshop this summer. Those who took part were inspired by the presenter, the Rev. Carol Roth from the Anglican Children's Ministry Team in the Diocese of Brisbane. For more information on this program about the Christian nurture of children and young people contact Brian or Margaret Gibbs 03 6427 3884.

The Scripture Union East Devonport Holiday Happening has been running for many years, and once again, under the dedicated leadership of Ronnie Palmer and Mary Eyles, it's been highly successful. About 40 children from Kindergarten through Grade 6 took part in some great activities based on Max Lucado's book The Song of the King, spread over four mornings in January.
