Church and community keep time in Richmond

The recent restoration of St Luke's Church, Richmond has been warmly embraced by the whole Richmond community to the extent that a group of 32 local residents have formed themselves into a Clockwinders' Guild to perform the twice-weekly manual winding of the clock on a roster basis.

A special feature of the service of Celebration and Thanksgiving on 12 December was the presentation to the clockwinders of replica keys, made as a recent project by children from the Richmond Primary School.

Commonly referred to as the Richmond Town Clock, the historic Thwaites and Reed turret clock was first installed in the original St David's Church in Murray Street, Hobart before being given to St Luke's in 1922.

People of all ages

Despite the hot and humid weather, the beautifully-restored church was packed with 250 people of all ages, including the Bishop of Tasmania, the Right Reverend John Harrower, representatives of the Richmond community and visiting musicians.

The Chairman of St Luke's Restoration Committee, Mr Kerry Bowerman, made special mention of the funding support from the Tasmanian Community Foundation, the Tasmanian Heritage Council, the Bicentenary Program, the Clarence Council and the Richmond community for their support of a public appeal.
