Camp Visitor Helen Phillips reports

Anglican Summer Camps were well under way when I dropped in.

East Coast Canoe Camp, led by Yvonne, was a bit wet (from lots of lovely East Coast rain) but spirits remained high. There was plenty of opportunity for problem-solving given such damp conditions. The cook was still smiling when I arrived, which was an indication of the positive nature of the team. Temporary camp tables, including 'contemporary' tea-towel racks, rafts and camp fires were all complete by the time I visited. The team and kids were grateful for the old mill house when the rain descended.

I was persuaded to mime Thomas the Tank Engine in theatre sports just before departing. Fortunately for me, and everyone else, someone guessed the TV program title quickly.

Coastal Camp, led by Stelle, was also a hit at Montgomery Park for upper primary children. During my visit children were singing memory verses with great gusto to some amazing tunes. Non-stop soccer didn't stop for a long time and I viewed a performance of original theme songs and movements by each of the camp groups. Leaders and children were fully engaged in their program and enjoying the circus theme. I missed the lions! At Waves for Grade 7-9 led by Kate, with Paul Cavanough in the kitchen, a great sound system in place and lots of great young leaders, the morale of kids and team was high. My visit coincided with a teaching, singing and Bible time.

It is so exciting being with young people as they ask deep questions about the Bible and about faith. While still learning themselves, leaders were exploring issues like baptism, why didn't Jesus didn't get married and I overheard the comment, 'Well, I wouldn't talk to a snake.'
