This trip will offer a unique opportunity for pilgrims to spend time with Island people, experiencing their life and being encouraged by their faith. The trip involves time on three islands: Thursday, Darnley and Murray, with highlights being worship at the Quetta memorial cathedral on Thursday Island; celebrating the festival of the coming of the light (the coming of the first missionaries to the Torres Strait) on Darnley where they landed; and worship with the people of Murray Island. Most mainlanders (especially from the South of Australia) never have this opportunity for grass roots engagement with the indigenous people of the Torres Strait; and besides, it's beautifully warm in far North Queensland in June/July. The leader from ABM will be Carolyn Kitto. The plan is that the pilgrims will be the diocesan bishops of Tasmania and Wangaratta, plus five young people from the diocese. Bishops Saibo Mabo and John Noble from North Queensland will also join the trip. The Proposed Itinerary
The CostThe cost is expected to be $3650 and includes flights ex Melbourne, all Torres Straits flights, all meals and accommodation and transfers. The cost does not include travel insurance, souvenirs and drinks/snacks etc. ABM does not seek to make a profit on Pilgrimages but must cover all the costs. The final cost will be confirmed closer to the pilgrimage date and will depend on the cost of airfares when they are booked. The sooner participants can be confirmed the sooner flights can be booked and prices locked in. What to bringPacking lists and forms will be sent to people as their participation is confirmed.
