A Huon Camp tradition - running the circle

Fire twirling added to the excitement.

Inspired by The Amazing Race

Huon camp is often misleadingly described as a kayaking camp. 2005 was the year of swing dancing, fire twirling, catapults, and The Amazing Race, all on a farm 15 minutes from Huonville, surrounded by trees, a river, and bellowing cows.

The campers and leaders did take to the water for four days and gradually increased their confidence and abilities in the rapids. The water level was much higher than previous years, and the Judbury waterfall had morphed into a large rapid!

The leaders were inspired by The Amazing Race when they invented the 'rest' day's activities. Three teams raced against the clock to complete five challenges. Following their cryptic clues, the teams carried a heavy blue rock up a river, along a ropes course, up a slippery tarpaulin covered in detergent and even into Chickenfeed at Huonville. They were left exhausted and still had two days of kayaking left!

Rock, back, kick, kick

The Swing Dance night was favourite for many. The dancefloor was a paddock and instead of formalwear most were dressed in thermals and boardshorts. Nevertheless, jazz music blared and everyone danced on into the dark. It will take a long time for many to get 'rock, back, kick, kick' out of their heads. The girls enjoyed it immensely and even the guys were enthusiastic, initiating an impromptu dance the next morning at breakfast!

Power

For many young Christians isolated across the state, Anglican Camps offer a place of community, fellowship and spiritual growth. This year the campers at Huon studied Acts, but learnt the most about Christianity away from the 'study times.' They learnt about God's creativity when they watched the rapids, saw the Christian lifestyle in the passionate leaders and fellow campers, and experienced God's healing power through prayer.
