And the rafters rang!

by Bruce Mitchell

St Michael's Church, Bothwell was filled with beautiful music as the Hobart City Veterans' Band and the Bagdad Singers led a resoundingly successful Hymn Festival at the end of October.

Almost 100 people sang many well-known and well-loved hymns. Organist Di Hallett and Gwen Hardstaff had done a great job selecting hymns, organising people and preparing food for the soup and sandwich lunch that followed the Festival.

The Veterans' Band, under the direction of Mr Ray Fahey, set the tone for the service with some stirring introductory music and provided some rest for the 'voice-boxes' by playing two brackets of music during the service. Not satisfied with a major contribution to the service, they also provided music while people slurped and munched their lunch!

Quality

Mr Chris Fehlberg's Bagdad Singers contributed with two brackets of songs, including The New 23rd Psalm, a delightful arrangement of a much loved and familiar psalm. As well, they added quality to the enthusiastic hymn singing.

There were many expressions of appreciation for the band, the singers and all who helped to make this another great occasion, with a number of requests for a repeat next year.
