What a wonderful afternoon it was on 21 March when the centenary of St Alban's Church at Koonya was celebrated. What a wonderful afternoon it was on 21 March when the centenary of St Alban's Church at Koonya was celebrated. Bishop John Harrower was present at the service conducted by the Rev. David Wilkins and Lay Reader Alison Shoobridge. People from near and far were present. The church will hold seventy people, and there were one hundred and four in this congregation, so the singing of four lovely old hymns was worth hearing! After the service the womenfolk of the area provided afternoon tea which was held in the old rectory, by courtesy of Mrs Dora Thomson whose family now occupies it. Over the years many a sermon must have been helped by the peace and beauty of this lovely home and its surroundings. AnecdotesThe parish and local community have compiled a record of St Alban's one hundred years and the Tasmanian Anglican has received a copy of this commemorative booklet which has already been reprinted. Contributing editor Kate Sainsbury researched records and family anecdotes and with the assistance of parishioner Alan Imber, Ian Boersma from the Port Arthur Historic Site, and the Tasman Online Access Centre the result is a most interesting record of the history of St Alban's Church from its very beginning, when a building committee formed in 1894. The descendants of many of the original families in the parish still live in the now expanded Parish of Sorell, Richmond and Tasman. We are often reminded that we should use our talents. It is very apparent that the people of St Alban's at Koonya have done that and they are to be congratulated on their faithful recording of their church's history. |
