The weather was kind on July 10 for the 37th St Luke's Book Sale, and the new earlier starting time of 9.00 am worked well, giving the many enthusiastic patrons an extra half hour to browse and buy. This annual event in Taroona has become much more than simply a fundraiser for Clarendon Children's Homes. There is wide community support throughout the year as books are collected from many sources, and on the day buyers come from as far away as Launceston in the North and the Channel in the South. The ongoing work of collecting, sorting, pricing and after-sale storing and recycling is carried out by a large group of helpers, co-ordinated by a small committee. This year a cheque for $6000 was presented to Marion Rainsford, the Director of Clarendon, at a celebratory morning tea given at Clarendon after the sale to thank all those involved. Collection for next year's sale has already begun! The Book Sale has become an important event in the parish year in Taroona, linking the Church family into the wider community in very practical ways.
