Stirrings of the Soul by Michael Raiter won the 2004 Australian Christian Book of the Year Award knocking Living by the Sword by Bishop Tom Frame to second prize, and Going the Distance by Bishop Peter Brain, to third place. Books were submitted by over 20 Australian publishers and - unusually - two were by bishops. Judges praised Stirrings of the Soul for its timely treatment of the various ways in which-without a great deal of discerning thought-the New Spirituality has affected Australian Christians. Author Michael Raiter, after working in Pakistan as a missionary for eleven years, is now Head of the Department of Mission at Sydney's Moore Theological College. Living by the Sword: The Ethics of Armed Intervention addresses the Australian military experience from a Christian ethical perspective, and faces squarely the conundrum of Australia's involvement in the invasion of Iraq. Dr Frame served as a naval officer before becoming Anglican Bishop to the Australian Defence Force Going the Distance (with its topically Olympic-style cover photograph and theme 'Christian ministry is not a sprint; it's a marathon') is a practical handbook on 'burn-out' avoidance for those involved in Christian ministry. Since 1975, Peter Brain has worked in churches in Sydney, Adelaide, and Perth, before becoming Bishop of Armidale. Living by the Sword is published by UNSW Press; Stirrings of the Soul and Going the Distance are from Matthias Media. The awards are organised annually by SPCK-Australia for the Australian Christian Literature Society. |
