Double Click - Alternative Software (Pt 3)

by Andrew Lang

One of the wonderful things about the internet, is that it has opened up new ways for people to share software. There is a large range of software now available at little or no cost, not only as an alternative to the more expensive proprietary software, but also to do odd little jobs.

Finding what people are offering is helped by sites like tucows or TuDogs. A good list can be obtained by googling 'Free software downloads'.

It is worth a look at some of the bigger sites as they can offer some interesting and quite well-developed programs like one for preparing readers/servers/musicians rosters. Some of these are shareware, but if it does what you want and saves you time, it is worth a few dollars. Conversely, you may have written something that others may use - these sites can help you share it with the world.
