Why ministry to seniors? |

In regard to our 'senior' citizens' it is important that: Seniors are valued because of: their unique experiences and contribution to their faith community and the wider community; their dignity in being created by God; they can teach us. We are not patronising, either consciously or sub-consciously - they have not been 'superseded'; they need encouragement to express their faith and accept the expression of others; they have independent minds and ideas; they have experienced great change in their lives; their gifts need to be encouraged so that they can do more than just hand out the prayerbooks or go on the lawn mowing roster. We see this as a booming mission field - in four years time there will be more people over 50 than under; we already have a network into this age-group; the church offers community to those who are often isolated; this age-group sometimes has more available time if they wish to serve other age-groups, such as youth and young adults. Senior time should be a rich time for - reflecting on life and enjoying friendships; exploring new areas of life and sharing experience; celebration of the gift of longer life; helping others who struggle and accepting help when we ourselves struggle; finding strength in our faith in the dark hours. Finally, because Bishop John has challenged me by his transforminglife document and given permission, I am encouraged by friends and my church to 'take the risk.' |
