The Parish String Quartet at the special celebrations on St James' Day in St James, New Town

Combined focus on St James' Day

The 25th of August had a combined focus for the parishioners of St James, New Town and St Andrew's, Lenah Valley.

It was St James' Day and National Tree planting day. For some time the Parish Council has been considering what to do with the grounds of St James and tree planting was high on the agenda.

Under the direction of Diane Coughran it was decided that the Parish would purchase four trees to be planted on Sunday 25 August. Added to these were two trees in memory of Leonard Ernest Wall and Marie Rae Bower, both long-standing parishioners of St James. The trees were planted following the 8.00 a.m. service.

Music-Fest

In the evening the congregation joined together to celebrate St James' Day with a service of Praise and Thanksgiving. Under the direction of Mary Bennett we were treated to a Music-Fest provided by musicians and singers from the parish. The programme included the St James' Day Singers, the Parish String Quartet, Piano, Flute, Saxophone and Pipe Organ. The Rev. Helen Phillips was the guest speaker, who reminded us about being famous for God and how we can be servants to each other.

The congregation was engaged in an exercise that had them anointing each others' hands and reading scripture and the service was followed by a chicken and wine supper in the Parish Hall.
