New chapter begins

by Eric Cave

The Bishop's announcement of the appointment of the Rev. Charles Whitton to the office of Chaplain to the Prison Service, to commence on 20 September this year marks the beginning of a new chapter in the history of Chaplaincy and the Diocese.

Ministry to inmates, by the Anglican Church, has been in place for at least the past forty years. Fr Jim Smith provided an Anglican presence at the prisons from the mid sixties. He was followed successively by the Reverends Andrew Young, Ric Cartledge, and Charles Whitton; each in their turn Rector of Bellerive. Indeed a debt of gratitude is owed to the parish for their willingness to share their priests so generously. Thanks too needs to be expressed to these men for the time they have given to this ministry.

Envisaged

Contrary to the views being expressed in the media, it is envisaged that the new appointee will endeavour to work with existing groups who seek to provide support for inmates and their families. It is not the intention of ACT to be engaged in rivalry as reported in the press.

This position is a joint funding venture between Anglican Chaplaincy Tasmania (ACT) and the Department of Justice. However in order to sustain the position ACT will need to generate each year an extra twenty thousand dollars. Support for this ministry both by prayer and financially is most welcome.

Support

Tax deductible donations to Prison Chaplaincy can be made through the Margaret Allwright Foundation by contacting the Senior Chaplain Canon Eric Cave or by sending a cheque, care of the Chaplaincy Department Royal Hobart Hospital, with a note telling of your intention to support this ministry.
