Who is the Bishop? - considering the options with Grade 1 at Launceston Church Grammar School's annual Bishop's Day

Who is the Bishop?

by Scott Sargent

A dentist, a doctor, a circus performer, Mrs Morris' dad, a chief, a motor bike rider - these were some of the answers given by Mrs Morris' Prep. class to her question, 'Who is the Bishop?' shortly before they got to meet Bishop John at the recent Launceston Church Grammar School's annual Bishop's Day.

The day was a great success. Bishop John began at the Junior School weekly chapel service, speaking about the original Olympic games and the need for rules, guidelines and working together in teams, linking this to the two great commandments of loving God and loving our neighbour. John then spent the morning with both Prep. and Grade 1 classes.

A highlight for the Bishop was receiving an 'outstanding' sticker from a Grade 1 boy who declared John an 'outstanding visitor'.

Shone through

The Bishop again spoke about the Olympics to the Senior School students and staff at Headmaster's assembly and in an open forum the Grade 9s and 10s asked questions that varied from 'Do you believe your friends who don't follow your religion go to hell?' to 'Do you believe in Jesus more than God?'

John met with five senior students who are preparing for confirmation and a Grade 12 student who is soon to be baptised. Later that night John meet with the school board and shared his 'Transforming Life' vision for Tasmania and the school's role in that vision.

John's warmth, encouragement and commitment to and love for God and all people shone through and all the Grammar community warmly received him.
