'What on earth am I here for?'

by David Hann

The Parish of Kingston has recently completed Rick Warren's program, 40 Days of Purpose. During this journey more than 300 people have participated in study groups, with small group studies involving six weeks of looking at God's purposes for our lives.

Sunday sermons were tied into the weekly theme and we gathered for corporate celebrations with a Ministry Fair during the program and a Celebration Sunday at the end.

At the Ministry Fair on 1 August parishioners contributed by setting up more than 25 very colourful stalls highlighting various ministries in the parish and outside ministries with which we have associations: Gayelene Harrower assisted with one of her donkeys and Mission Afloat and World Vision presented displays. Several stalls offered a wide range of food and refreshment and we were assisted by Fusion who provided the barbecue. We were blessed with a fine day with stalls set up in the St Clements Church, Chapel and foyer with a number outside.

Up-front

On the final Sunday, 'Celebration Sunday', each of the day's services was followed by breakfast, brunch or afternoon tea as appropriate.

During regular services throughout the program we heard the testimonies of several parishioners. These have been very encouraging, not least because the people giving their testimony have not been 'up front' parishioners. We were blessed to have a very energetic organising committee headed by the Rev. Meredith Campbell and the Rev. Dr Tom Wallace.

Those who have participated have without exception found the programme to be exciting. They have been provided with a new or better understanding of God's purposes for our lives and a much better understanding of the answer to the question posed at the outset: 'What on earth am I here for?'
