Merilyn Lavender

Parish of Moonah seeks Organist/Director of Music

With the retirement of Merilyn Lavender, the Parish of Moonah is now looking for an Organist/Director of music.

After being involved with music in the Parish of Moonah for 38 years Merilyn has decided that it is time to retire.

At the age of 11 Merilyn began playing the piano for Sunday School and was soon helping with church services at St Anne’s and St Mary’s. As a 16 year-old Ogilvie High School student she was inducted as Organist of St Mary’s on 23 July, 1967. Over the ensuing years she has exercised her music ministry with great devotion and encouragement to many, not only in the Parish but also in the wider community.

The Parish of Moonah has been fortunate to have someone as willing and able as Merilyn, to play the organ, keyboard and digital ensemble; to lead the fortnightly ‘Sing-a-longs’ and to encourage all in worship. For many, her leading of ‘Christmas in the Shed’ last year resulted in one of the greatest Christmas services in many years.

‘To God be the glory.’

In playing her part in the life of the Parish, Merilyn has only had one intention: ‘To God be the glory.’

She has been a Sunday School teacher and superintendent, a member of Young Anglican Fellowship and GFS. Merilyn has organised and conducted GFS musical activities and children’s programs, formed a parish band and was responsible for the Religious Education programme at Bowen Road State School for several years. She was also instrumental in establishing a large and active Young Women’s Group in the parish during the 1980s, and has represented parishioners on vestries, parish councils and the ministry team. Merilyn has always acknowledged the importance of building and maintaining a stong sense of community for all in the Parish of Moonah.

Merilyn Lavender will be missed!

If you would like to be considered for the position of Organist/Director of music in the Parish of Moonah please direct all enquiries to the Rector, the Revd Mark Pearce.
