A welcoming smile familiar to thousands:
Senior Steward Emeritus, Fred Pritchett

From the Cathedral - Fred

by Stuart Blackler

Fred Pritchett has been the first and very welcoming person seen by thousands of people as they have married at the Cathedral, for years. As Senior Steward Fred has been the person responsible to see that ‘Front of House’ operated calmly and efficiently on so many occasions, including the great festivals when seating is at a premium and special services when pastoral takes precedence over the Gospel information.

When Fred turned 90 in 2001 a sold-out dinner brought together the Cathedral family and many of his wide circle of friends. This year Fred has found it necessary to hang up his collection plate (quite a feat when you think about it) and move to live with family in Launceston.

He was able to be in Hobart on 18 July when, to his surprise, he was presented with a certificate of recognition of his service from the Bishop, duly sealed and recorded by the Registrar. The Dean on behalf of the Chapter and Cathedral family proclaimed our friend - our ‘cobber’, to use his word - as Senior Steward Emeritus.

Cathedral Foundation

It has been gratifying to see a number of people becoming Life Members and members of the Foundation. Designated and tax-deductible gifts have been made and the Bequest Fund has been activated as has the facility for membership and gifts to be paid by credit card.

Peter Cripps has been commissioned by the Foundation to prepare a Conservation Management Plan and Peter Boyce has accepted the position of co-ordinating editor of a history of the Cathedral. The Management Plan is due to be completed on S. David’s Day (1 March) 2005; the proposed publication date for the history is S. David’s Day 2006.

Information about the Foundation is obtainable from the Cathedral Office. A Foundation link to the Diocesan and Cathedral website is being established with information and latest news.
