Double Click
Alternative Software (Pt 2)

by Andrew Lang

Microsoft Internet Explorer is one of the most commonly used browser tools. Its promotion with the Windows Operating System and significant problems a number of years ago with its main competitor, Netscape, has seen its domination of the market.

But a number of recent vulnerabilities has meant that it has itself become a security risk for your machine. There are alternatives.

Apple users have the advantage of a good proprietary product ( Safari, which has a built in google search). Windows users can choose to look at products like Opera (http://www.opera.com/) or Mozilla Firefox (http://www.mozilla.org/products/firefox/).

All of these offer the ability to block those annoying popup ads. Like all software, it comes down to personal need and choice. What suits me may not suit you in your situation.

The message is that there are alternatives and if you are frustrated with what you have, take some time to look around.

Andrew is now living in Horsham but will continue to write this column for the time being - he says he has plenty more ideas! Ed.
