Mission Afloat

by Allister Martin

  • Easter is over and the weather is typically Tasmanian Autumn as the bookings are still coming in to Mission Afloat! Schools are holding their class camps; water and beach activities are enhanced by the addition of the Pussycat, the war canoes and the snorkelling course; the manager and his right hand man are still in shorts!!!
  • As well as being MAST approved, we are now an official Yachting Australia training centre.
  • We have received the donation of a 10 metre caravan which when refurbished will form the base for aquatic camps around the coast. What a versatile vehicle! Many thanks to Bishop Alf Chipman for his generosity.
  • John Bloem completed work experience at Mission Afloat during March, working alongside his grandfather, Bert Steele. He has now returned to his studies in Victoria.
  • The maypole will be ready for use soon, forming another excellent shore-based activity for children of all ages.
  • Senator Eric Abetz gave us a large Australian flag to replace the one that 'went walkabout.'
  • Do you want to host a large gathering for your extended family? Montgomery Park is the ideal place to relax together in comfortable surroundings with plenty for the children to do. Book early: weekends are filling up.
  • Welcome to Robin who has joined us as part of the Work for the Dole programme. He, Jon and Scott are largely responsible for the neat grounds and craft kits.
  • We have been given a lovely wooden dinghy, four archery bows and four sets of lawn bowls. Does this mean we must upgrade the oval to bowling green standard...??
  • The Anglican Womens Guild has chosen us once again as their major fundraising project of the year.
  • Thank you to Gordon Gowlland for the quiet and efficient extractor fan that makes working in the shed so much easier! And to Arthur Wherrett and Arthur Hinsley for the hundreds of fishing line blanks they have cut out. The percentage of Tasmanian children who own their own fishing line is growing. Also, thanks to Peter Harvey at Ricoh for the loan of a new photocopier! Thank you to Betty Broadley, Annette Wrightson and Esther Souter for their wonderful catering help during the last few months.

Thank you ALL for your on-going support, donations, prayers and encouragement.
