Besides the risk of seeing what ought not to be seen, older children face other risks.

Chat rooms are a great way to communicate, but they also have their own dangers. Essentially, there is anonymity in these places and people aren't always who they say they are. Predators are quite skilled at enticing children into relationships with all the right words. Parents should educate their children about Stranger Danger on-line as well.

A few simple rules
  • Always consider the possibility of deception.
  • Never give out personal details - like addresses, phone numbers, school attended etc.
  • Never arrange to meet, particularly on your own.
  • Never pass on details like bank accounts or credit card numbers.

Moderated chat rooms are supervised and can provide a level of security, but they do not supervise private conversations. As with younger children, the computer should be in a place where it can be supervised by the parents.
