To the One Within and Beyond

by James Charlton

(A partial, unconstrained paraphrase of Psalm 25)

To you, the Inexpressible, I open my inner life.
Don't let false props get the better of me;
don't let attachment or aversion defeat my true self.
When I am distracted I forget your faithfulness;
I forget who I really am. Illusions of a separate,
individualistic self overwhelm me;
I blame my reactions on outside causes.
Teach me to live truthfully within and without;
encourage me in times of wilfulness to find my own integrity.

Inexpressible Friend, I would listen to the silence
of my deepest nature and manifest my full humanity.
Sustain me in my sufferings. Lonely, weak or anxious,
may I know your liberating presence;
may I realize, in conscious experience,my own freedom.
