This book tells the story of Barbara Clementine Harris, a Philadelphian black woman who became the first woman bishop of the Anglican Communion. It is an uplifting story, with humour, wisdom and is generally well told. Jamaican author Bozzuti-Jones is a former Jesuit priest, now an Episcopalian priest and Associate Rector of Christ Church in Cambridge, Massachusetts; he has compiled information from conversations with Bishop Harris, her friends and family and written this 'charming biography.' I was a little worried by the note that 'the primary events are true, but the childhood events are fictionalised versions of real events.' This left me wondering what exactly was true and what was false, and detracted from the power of the story a little. Written in quite an easy-read style, it would be suitable for twelve year-olds upwards, but interesting for all. It is worth reading for just the background information and seems to be quite well researched. The last chapter struck me as being slightly hurried however, with a drop in the clarity and several unexplained occurrences such as an accusation that Bishop Harris was divorced. With only 86 pages, this book is definitely not a hard slog and is good reading for any young Christian looking for inspiration through tricky times. |
