Safe Surfing (Pt 1)

The Internet is a wonderful place, but it is also a dangerous place.

Parents should not assume that children are not able to get themselves into trouble when surfing on the net. Natural curiosity and ignorance of the potential dangers can put young people at risk when they go on-line.

Perhaps the first danger is that they will see what they ought not see. There are many 'adult' images available on line as well as violent ones and as parents we desire to protect our children from them.

A good family filter like net-nanny can prevent most of this. You have settings in the preferences in Internet Explorer (but I am not sure of their effectiveness). Google allows you to set your searches to 'safe' as well.

Although these measures are effective, we must not be complacent. We should be aware of what our children are investigating. Particularly with young children, having the computer in the bedroom is a great risk-it should be in a place close to parental supervision.
