Making a difference

by Johanna Kornaczewski

Some of the congregation at St Thomas' Howrah are somewhat fitter after entering a team in the Cancer Council's Relay for Life (a 22 hour non-stop relay) in February.

Seeing this as an opportunity to reach out to the community and show a concern for those affected by cancer, the team descended on the Domain in Hobart armed with jogging shoes, a tent, a thermos and newly acquired parish t-shirts.

Owls

With some walking, some jogging and some even running, the team braved the sun, the rain and wind (which was so strong we almost lost our tarp!) to clock up a total of 130 km - that's about as far as Hobart to Campbelltown.

Those who were especially keen (or simply just night owls) braved the chilly conditions between 2 a.m. and 6 a.m.

Curious

Amongst all the jogging and walking, was the opportunity to talk to others involved in the relay, including other Christians who came and introduced themselves. Being the only Christian team entered, meant that people were curious to know who we were. And the team managed to hold a small communion service on the Sunday morning.

Praise the LORD for this wonderful opportunity to reach out into the community and make a difference; raising over $1000 for the Cancer Council.
