The launch and blessing of two dinghies, the Gull and the Teal, took place at Mission Afloat, Coningham, on a Sunday afternoon in February. These two boats were funded by St Paul's Glenorchy and are part of a group of four dinghies purpose-built for Mission Afloat. A barbecue was held prior to the launch. Visitors then spent the afternoon enjoying the beach and facilities of Montgomery Park. WreckAlso launched on that day was a modified TS 16 craft which has been remodelled to an open boat under the supervision of Bert Steele. From a virtual wreck it has become the show piece of the Mission fleet. As well, an outboard motor donated by the Margate Ladies' Guild was commissioned. For the Guild it was a happy conclusion to their fellowship at the Margate church which had held its final service on that day. African friendsMission Afloat director, Allister Martin, impressed the adults and excited the youth when he described the equipment, and demonstrated the range of innovative working models and useful fishing gear that can be constructed in the shed. When boat rides were announced it took no time for the children to don lifejackets and queue up on the beach. For St Paul's African friends this was a new experience which was both thrilling and scary. It was a great day that no one wanted to end. FantasticThrough the fun and challenge of water-based activities Mission Afloat has the potential to reach out to many unchurched young people with the message of Christ. It is a fantastic facility which deserves the support, promotion and prayer of the whole Missionary Diocese of Tasmania. |
