Garbag fashion on Banana Island

Burnie goes bananas

by Will Briggs

The Parish of Burnie was 'Going bananas' with its annual Holiday Club in January.

A group of amazing volunteers came together to work with primary-aged children from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. for five days.

The crafts and games, which included a garbage-bag-and-newspaper fashion parade and Burnie's own 'bottom-ball' championship, were all held on 'Banana Island' - the home of the 'Banana Boys' who introduced people in the Bible who had 'Gone Bananas' for God.

Over thirty children attended and the enthusiasm of the team helped create an atmosphere of enjoyment. The excursion to Wing's Farm Park at Gunn's Plains was a particular delight.

The week finished with a strong sense that the time had been worthwhile in forming relationships and enjoying ourselves, while talking to children about the delights of a God who has 'gone bananas' for us.

We look forward to what else can be done in times to come.
