Secret Agents meet on King Island

by Richard Minol: (A.K.A. The Rev)

On Monday morning 2 Feb 2004, at about 9:45 children started arriving for their week as 'Secret Agents', the theme of Scripture Union's holiday program.

The churches of King Island combined to run the holiday club, which was held in the fellowship room of the Anglican Church. Up to two dozen children aged between five and ten years took part in the week of fun, learning about Jesus through the media of story, craft and singing, with many attending the Sunday children's worship service to finish off the program.

During the week the children heard the stories of Jesus and the lame man let down from the roof on a mat; the raising of Jairus' daughter; Jesus' triumphal entry and the testing by the leaders; his passion and resurrection. The theme is based on Jewish leaders who sent their Secret Agents to investigate Jesus and his teachings.

Secret password

The children enthusiastically joined in the singing led by Richard, were very attentive through the stories read by Sr Marlene from the Catholic Church, and learned new crafts assisted by the team led by Jennifer. With the youngest children being cared for by Kelly Lancaster, all the children could do craft suited to their abilities. During each day a pair of Secret Agents (Richard and Rhonda Nievaart) visited to see if there were any agents who knew the secret password so they could be given a secret message to decipher. Passwords were lines from the songs. If an agent gave the wrong response, a child knew that they were not being given the correct information. The secret messages were the passages of Scripture for each day.

Watered

Sunday morning worship was an interactive service with children deciphering their message while Richard encouraged the adults, explaining that Luke wrote his story of Jesus, checking all the sources for accuracy, so that we could be assured of the truth concerning Jesus. (Luke 1:1-4)

Fun games and activities helped to reinforce each day's themes, while selected scenes from the video 'The Miracle Maker,' enhanced the program. By the end of the week a very tired but pleased crew thanked God for the opportunity to share their love of Jesus in such a fun way.

Half the children attending did not have regular church contact. We pray that the seeds planted will be allowed to be watered and grow into faith.
