WYSIWYG?

Computerspeak is full of odd little acronyms. WYSIWYG is one of the longer ones and means 'What-You-See-Is-What-You-Get.' That is, the program or feature is exactly how it looks, supposedly with no hidden surprises. (Well, that's the intention.)

Such transparency can be a good thing and can certainly help those of us who are easily confused by computers and their sometimes mysterious ways. 'Ah,' you say, 'but they make things so much easier and faster.' Maybe so. They have certainly added new words to our wonderfully flexible language.

At the launch of transforminglife, Bishop John showed a photo of a timid ginger kitten staring admiringly (as only a cat can!) into a mirror. Smiling regally back from the mirror is a large MGM-style lion with a glorious mane.

The heading on the picture was 'The wild and transforming Anglican'. This is a creature who will be prayerful, enlivened by faith and the Holy Spirit, and taking initiative in mission.

Is the kitten just dreaming, or is that what it really sees in the mirror? And what do others see?

If we apply the same principle to ourselves, would we be idly dreaming or would it be a WYSIWYG thing?

There's a challenge to Tasmanian Anglicans. Let each of us become a 'WATA' - Wild-And-Transforming-Anglican.

Let's go for it!
